Why Do We Feel Stiffer as the Weather Gets Colder?
If you've noticed your joints ache more in the winter or your muscles feel tighter on a cold morning, you're not imagining it. Many people experience increased stiffness as temperatures drop, and there are real physiological reasons behind it.
Blood flow changes
When it's cold, your body prioritizes keeping your core warm by narrowing blood vessels near the skin and extremities. This reduces circulation to muscles and joints, which can make them feel tighter and less flexible than usual.
Barometric pressure shifts
Cold weather often brings changes in atmospheric pressure. Some researchers believe that lower pressure allows tissues around joints to expand slightly, which can irritate nerve endings and increase discomfort, especially for people with arthritis or old injuries.
Thicker fluid, slower movement
Synovial fluid, the natural lubricant in your joints, can become more viscous in colder conditions, similar to how oil thickens in a cold engine. This makes joints feel stiffer until they're warmed up through movement.
We move less in winter
Shorter days and colder temperatures often mean less physical activity overall. Reduced movement leads to muscle deconditioning and stiffness that compounds over the season.
Muscle tension from bracing against the cold
Many people unconsciously tense their shoulders, neck, and back when they're cold, which contributes to soreness and restricted mobility.
What you can do about it:
- Warm up gradually before activity, even simple daily tasks
- Dress in layers to keep muscles and joints warm
- Stay active with low-impact movement like walking, stretching, or swimming
- Stay hydrated, as dehydration can worsen stiffness
- Address old injuries or chronic conditions before they flare up
If winter stiffness is affecting your daily life, physiotherapy can help identify the underlying cause, whether it's an old injury, arthritis, or general deconditioning, and build a plan to keep you moving comfortably all season long.
